How To Start A Busy Forum In ONE Day

Thu, Oct 22, 2009

Articles, Internet Marketing, Tips

Well, almost one day. It will take a bit of preparation but once you announce your forum it will be swarming with hundreds of real member and posts from day one… how? Read on…

I developed this method after failing badly when I first attempted to start an online discusion forum.  It’s a pretty much fail proof method for getting a forum started.

If you’ve ever tried or even thought about starting an internet forum before, you will know that it is not easy.

Initially, you are faced with 3 main problems:

  1. Getting people to sign up (who wants to join an empty forum?)
  2. Getting people to start making posts
  3. Keeping momentum and growth of membership and activity going.

Lets look at how I dealt with each issue one at a time:

Getting people to sign up.  This was super simple, I disguised the forum sign up page as a squeeze page! :)

I just gave away some valuable stuff related to this niche, in exchange all I asked was that they give me their name, email, username and password.

I used a script I had specially designed (more on that later) that secretly added their details into a forum as soon as they signed up. On the thankyou page, they get the items they were promised and I like to add a viral element to perpetuate growth, a tell-a-friend script or something like it, but I don’t mention anything about the forum, not yet.

Getting people to start making posts. I continue sending traffic to this squeeze page until I have around 400-500 or more members. At this point I send an email to everyone announcing the forum and a contest…

… The first 10 members to make 80 legitimate and worthwhile posts get more free valuable downloads, and I like to give position 1-5 some vouchers to spend at a popular store related to the niche, or amazon or somewhere similar.

Still continue sending traffic but now change your thankyou page to encourage people into the forum.

Have a ’sticky’ thread in the forum and continually update it as winners of the post contest are announced, emailing the members directing them to the post. Insert their username and password into the email and encourage them to get involved.

By the time it comes to having to pay out the prizes, you will have an active forum with hundreds of members and around 1000 or more articles. Of course you could always wait longer before announcing the forum and have a bigger contest to increase this.

Anyway, you’ll have an internet property that’s very saleable or ready to be nurtured.

Keeping momentum. If you just plan on flipping the site, this isn’t really your concern, but if you want to keep it yourself, getting this right is what will make or break the forum.

Most importantly you should have been active in the forum yourself, moving discussions forward and more importantly READING and getting to know your members.

You should have an idea of who knows what they’re talking about when it comes to the forums topic, who gets good debates going, and are fairly mature and intelligent.

You want to approach these people and invite them to be moderators. You can offer them something for doing this but a lot of the time you’ll find most people will be happy to do it for nothing.

This keeps your best members at the site and also gives them a vested interest in its success.

Now you just have to keep sending traffic to the squeeze page, you could run new competitions every now and again. I find article contests work well, just give say a $50 voucher to the winner, let people submit as many articles as they want, announce the winner once around 25 articles have been submitted.

This keeps people interested in visiting the forum, and gets your site lots of great new content.

Another contest idea you could try is a $50 voucher for most active thread. This will have people trying to come up with interesting threads.

Want a copy of the script I use to automate the signup process?

Now I had originally planned to release this method/software, together with some interviews with successful forum owners, tips on running forums, that sort of thing. I was going to sell it all as a package for at least $97.

But my business has gone in a different direction, and I have this script sitting doing nothing.

I actually paid a developer a few hundred dollars to create this script, but you can grab it now completely FREE!

The script was fully working the last time I used it, but I won’t be providing further support or updates. I just don’t have the time to support it.

It’s a great script, and includes a mailer and everything else described in the above method. You only need to install it once and you can use it to start as many forums as you want on different domains.

Its a php/MySQL script.

Just make a reply to this post and you’ll instantly and automatically receive a copy of the script via email.

So just let me know what you think of this method, or talk about other methods you know about creating successful forums, or even just say thanks, and the script is yours!  :)

Thanks for these great tips, Gary. I am working on some Forum software for Internet marketers, and these tips really fit in well with my project.

  2. T.M. Harris Says:

I like this post. The very first part, disguising the registration form as a squeeze page where you give away a freebie is a KILLER IDEA!

I’m gonna use that on the next forum I set up…especially since I learned how to create forums out of wordpress blogs! Keep it up Gary!

  3. Gary Says:

    Thanks

  4. Allen Says:

Great post. I’ve always toyed with the idea of starting a forum, but couldn’t ever get past figuring out how to populate it with good content.

  5. Annie Says:

Thanks Gary. Great post which has got me thinking, but I may have to do some asking as well!

  6. Jonathan Gillardi Says:

Awesome System, Cannot wait to try it out….

  7. dave Says:

Gary, Interesting thoughts on forum traffic. I’ve run forums in the past and yes, those initial “fill out” problems are the worst. I once had a forum sit for months before it began to get filled…with spam!

One question – how are you getting people to the “squeeze page” effectively? Article Marketing? PPC ads?

    Thanks.

  8. Jimmy Says:

    Thanks for sharing!

    Thanks soo much Gary!

  12. Gary Says:

Dave – Just any method of driving targetted traffic. But that’s a HUGE topic of its own I didn’t want to get into here.

  13. Helen Says:

That looks a great way of starting a forum. It’s something that I have always wanted to do, now I know how to do it successfully. Thanks

  14. Ram Says:

great useful info. thanks for sharing

  15. Lacey Says:

Gary, thank you for posting this! It was very informational, and you are right, giving away something for free really gets people amped! Because everyone else just sends you to some type of “sales” page or “squeeze” page where they want you to buy their overpriced product!

I have been giving away a free e-book, and for doing so, I have been making on average over $200 a day! I think it raises the trust between you and the person on the other end because they don’t feel taken advantage of, so of course they’re going to read what you have to say!

    Thanks a ton,
    Lacey

  16. Uncle Dean Says:

I have a NING Social networking site http:/newstartcommunityvoice.ning.com as well as being on other NING sites will this work for inviting others to join these sites?

  17. MontyPlums Says:

Ingenious idea. Very interested in this.

  18. Sybil Says:

Just learning all I can…thank you for the offer and useful info!
    Sybil

  19. tom Says:

Terrific idea. I am planning to add a forum some time soon. This looks like a winner.

  20. Gary Says:

Uncle Dean – This technique only really works with your own self hosted forums.

  21. Dave Ovenden Says:

    Hi Gary,

Thanks for the great tips on how to set up a successful forum. I love the ’squeeze page’ idea – pure genius!

Setting up a discussion forum is something that I have toyed with in the past but I always felt it would be difficult to establish. I will definitely give it a go now using your ideas.

    Thanks again,

  22. Ryan Says:

This article is very clever. Were any of the users upset that they were added to the forum? I don’t feel as if they would be, just wondering if there were any negatives. Thanks.

  23. Kathleen Says:

Wow…great information! I’ve had a forum/social network project in mind for months, but when the owners of Ning went all crazy and started treating their social network owners and developers like dirt, I gave up on the idea. I wasn’t sure how to launch it, and I wasn’t sure what platform to use since Ning took themselves out of the running. Well, now I know how to launch! Any suggestions, Gary, for an open source forum/social network platform? And is your PHP script Wordpress compatible? Thanks again for sharing!

  24. bob Says:

    Gary,

I’ve always had great success with contests for getting new forums going…but never considered a process like this “pre-load” members. Thanks for sharing the great idea (and the script).

    Bob

  25. Gary Says:

Ryan – I haven’t had any complaints. It’s up to them whether or not they want to make use of their forum membership and it doesn’t really affect them either way.

  26. John Says:

    Thank You!
    Some really good tips here!

  27. John Taylor Says:

Great idea to use a squeeze page Gary. Consider that one well and truly swiped! ;-)

    John

  28. Steven Says:

    Thanks, great info.

  29. Frank Thomas Says:

I have no problem with a squeeze page, but your deception violates any good standard of business ethics.

  30. Gary Says:

Kathleen – The script I had made works with phpBB and SMF. You would have to modify it to work with other more complete social networking scripts.

  31. Clinton Says:

    Great info.

  32. Gary Says:

Frank Thomas – I don’t see it as deception. There are many membership scripts that have bridges for forum scripts. You sign up to the site, you’re automatically added to the forum and you aren’t aware of it until after you join. I don’t see how this is different.

  33. Ilkka Kauppinen Says:

Actually I am more interested seeing how you deliver the script and what happens next than the script itself.

  34. Breaking News Says:

Brilliant idea, Gary, this is just what I need for two new things I’ve been working on, that are just limping along, needing more input. So now all I need to do is to come up with a couple of goodies as enticements.

Let me know what I can do to help you – check out the newspaper in my link there.

  35. Richard Says:

Thanks for the awesome tips on setting up a forum, I will use this for sure.

    Thank you very much.

  36. Gary Says:

Ilkka Kauppinen – My next blog post will explain and provide the script that does the autodelivery I’m doing right here! :)

  37. Tourist-a Says:

Wow looks very interesting, i will try it thank you Gary

  42. JR Fent Says:

Wow! Great information. I can see how it would work – I just need a to find a reason to use this. Thanks!

  43. Evert Says:

Forums are great traffic machines, but I never got the ‘key’ to get the engine started. This script surely will skyrocket the launch. Thanks!

  44. Will Says:

Thanks Gary – glad I followed the link in your recent email. This script looks interesting! We aren’t selling widgets, but instead we’re selling services – software development. I’ll see if we can work this script into our Internet Marketing efforts.

  45. TRICK Says:

    thanks

  46. Kim Says:

Thank you, This sounds great I want to try it.

  47. King Sidharth Says:

Thanks Gary! Anyways, how do you monetize your forum?

I think you hit the nail on the head. I look forward to your script.

  51. jeff Says:

    Thanks for the ideas!

  52. jeff Says:

    Thanks for the great ideas!

  53. bob Says:

    Gary,

I realize you aren’t providing any support for the script but could we could get some valid installation instructions please?

The install text file refers to both a file that isn’t in the package and setting permission on something that also doesn’t exist .

I’ve tried installing twice, once uploading the files to the same folder they’re in inside the zip (ForumLaunchScript) and to another folder of my own creation (after purging the database before reinstalling).

Both times I got through the installation to the point it showed the admin panel login/password…but when I click the button to go to the admin panel it just results in a 404 error.

If you will provide me the proper install instructions and/or missing files, I’ll be happy to do a quick screem cam vid of the install and provide it to you so you can share it with eveyone if you like.

    Thanks,

    Bob

There is a huge opportunity here. Forum traffic is responsive and valuable. Great tips. Thanks for taking the time to post this.

  57. Rieke F. Says:

Great idea. Remembers me to forums on social sites like XING or LinkedIn. I can only confirm,
when you have content, themes of interest, you’ll get response and a very good conversation.
These forums deliver QUALITY content. Not to compare with some out there in the cyberspace
    which only deliver ad-threads.

  58. Thom Says:

Thank you Gary. This a great post. I needed this sort of information

  59. Sara Says:

I’ve often wondered what sort of tactics and tricks were used to start with a blank forum and make it work. Great ideas. I just may put this to use.

    Thanks for the script too!

  81. Gil Says:

Interesting method. It is a little devious, but anyone can unsubscribe from the forum if they want to.

    Hi Gary

    Amin

  86. ningsusiwi Says:

Hey,Jeffrey. It is absoluely useful tips, thanks for your sharing.

  87. Andrew Says:

    Hi Gary,
thanks for the great insight, I think most people stear clear of forums for the very reasons you stated. As with any venture it is your audience that is going to be your lifeline and support.
    Thanks for your post!

    Make it a great day

  88. Salvador Says:

Thank you for this – I already run a forum which is fairly busy – but simple and obvious ideas like yours are really valuable and again I thank you for sharing them – I will return to tell you how it has gone for me

  89. Mark Says:

That seems like a really good way to start it with a bang. I have had a couple forums and it seems the 6 month period is when it starts to slow down. I have used to posting contest and voucher contest thing but it only ever made a spurt at best. I do think the Admin has to have a daily pretense to perhaps avoid that. (I had good moderators and sort of let the day to day thing slide, so that could have been it.)

Any idea what % of members would be likely to pay to join a hidden board? (I know price point has something to do with it.) I am thinking a paid board needs great extra content. Having good informed and sharing mods would help if you get lucky. I am guessing the sooner you unveil a pay board the bigger the response before the momentum dies?

I am thinking you’d want to monetize it somehow. If you can keep the momentum going, enough to attract a continual stream of new members fast enough, and had the right mods, maybe it could be reasonable active for more then 6 months?
    Mark

  90. Steve O Says:

This sounds like a great idea. But I’d like to see how it works in practise.

  91. Gino Says:

    tks man

  92. kenny Says:

    thanks gary! great info

  93. Darren Says:

WOW great post lots of simple but really effective ideas, im sure there is more value in this post for free than a lot of stuff i have paid good money for (not from you)

i particularly liked the viral bit on thank you pages

    Darren

  94. Mikki Says:

WOW! I am so glad to see this post, honestly. I am one of those who attempted to get a forum going, and sadly have nothing but a ghost town. I tried hiring participants, just a few, to help get the threads started, reply to new posts and the like. I then myself was in there starting and replying. I directed traffic to the forum and had quite a few people sign up, but NO ONE was talking. After two months of paying to talk with only 3 other people I let the writers go and stared at the forum wondering how to get it active. I have read, studied and tried many tactics, but this Gary is an awesome approach – GIVING AWAY PRIZES! I love it!

  120. Steve Fisher Says:

    Hi Gary,

Your email caught my eye and I am very happy to read your post.

I need to try your method as it makes sense, I had spent 2 weeks setting up a kitchen remodeling niche forum with well written SEO meta tags, traffic is just okay but not what I had expected for the keyword phrases and the optimization used.

Gary, you have a very clean blog. Is it based on an available theme?

    Enjoyed reading your post!

    Steve Fisher

  121. ken Says:

Good stuff ! Looking forward to the script.

  122. Michael Says:

    Hi Gary,

Reading your post, I can’t help wondering what forum I secretly end up being a member of, by writing this comment ;)

Anyway, I haven’t quiet figured out yet, how a forum can help my business without taking to much time from my other efforts developing the business.

If I ever do find out, I’ll keep your post in mind and will try to make use of your software.

Thank you for sharing it freely.

  126. Reggie Says:

    Gary,

Thank you so much for this post.

I’ve been looking for a strategy for successfully starting a forum in my niche, which is lead generation for small businesses.

An additional bit I may add is to use a Word Press forum plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wpforum/installation/)so that I can use Word Press as the forum platform. If a widgetized theme is used, the forum can be monetized with some ads.

Anyway, thanks for the post and the script.
