Does TweeterGetter Generate Useless Untargetted Followers?

Thu, Feb 19, 2009

Articles, Internet Marketing, Tips, Updates

Amid the much recent discussion surrounding my new service TweeterGetter, some of those not in favor of the idea suggested that all it would do is attract a large number of useless and mainly untargetted followers.

For the majority that will not be the case, the entire design of the site has an ‘internet marketing’ style to it, the fact that it is a viral downline builder means it will largely attract and interest a particular group of people… business minded people, internet marketers and entrepreneurs.

Now while I was sure that would be the case, I had no real verifiable way to prove it, until I came across this… TwitterSheep.

TwitterSheep.com allows you to enter someones twitter username and it will generate a tag cloud showing what that users followers are talking about, here’s a shot of the subjects my followers have been talking about.

While there is definitely a wide spectrum of topics there, the main theme is blatantly business related.  Actually you could almost break it down and say my followers are “Online Social Marketers who Love People and Life”.

Cooool.  :)

Try TwitterSheep yourself, find out what your followers interests are so you can then communicate with them more effectivley.

I tried tweetergetter and the (very few) extra followers it generated were without a single exception people trying to push products or services that I was not remotely interested in.

  2. Gary Says:

The people above who you followed or the followers it generated?

There will always be people who abuse systems such as tweetergetter, those who use them wisely and try to provide content and build relationships with their new followers will reap the rewards, those who try to spam them will lost their new followers as quickly as they got them.

  3. Bill Masson (WWAH) Says:

    Hi Gary,
I completely agree that people are more motivated to join a group of likeminded individuals, but there will always be those who look at this type of recruiting for spamming, but I have not found this the case. Twitter sheep is a new one on me, I will check it out.

I have a favour to ask you, I recently changed my Twitter username from maxhomebits TO Bill_Masson I have changed my TweeterGetter name and it seems to be fine, but there is only me in the list when I click through, so just let me know if this is OK

    Thanks, Bill

My twitter profile was new and I had few followers. I still don’t have a ton now, but I feel that TwitterGetter helped bring in a majority of what’s there, even though was probably indirectly. Most are relevant, because I look.

You helped add a little bit of viral, so thanks!

“TwitterSheep.com allows you to enter someones twitter username and it will generate a tag cloud showing what that users followers are talking about, here’s a shot of the subjects my followers have been talking about.”

Actually, it is “a tag cloud from the ‘bios’ of your twitter flock”

  6. Rebecca Beasley Says:

I also changed my twitter username. Will this affect my twitter getting ability as long as I change it there as well? I wanted to say thanks for getting me so many new followers and to let you know that that link to the twittersheep.com came up page not found.

  7. Gary Says:

Thanks Anon for clearing that up. :)

  8. Gary Says:

Hi Rebecca – Changing your twitter username will ruin the viral effect of tweetergetter. You’ll have to start again but you’ll not get any more benefits from the first time you used it.

You’ll have to start a new chain, anyone who joins in your old chain will be lost. Unfortunately there is no way around this.

    Gary,

I just posted about my experience with twitter getter here:
    http://avani.boxeddots.com/2009/02/wow-tweetergetter/

I’m quite impressed with your system and the idea driving it. Feel free to use this as a testimonial of some kind if you want to. The article itself describes some mixed feelings about the way you choose to market the system, but it is mostly pointing out why the system is ethical, respectable, and something that works. :)

I meant to get this through to you by direct contact, but the helpdesk on your website does not seem to work, and I don’t think you follow me on twitter, and hence this slightly out-of-place comment here, I trust I’ll be excused.

    Best,
    Avani

    Hey Gary,

I’ve gotten hundreds of followers using your system, and I wanted to thank you again!

As you know, I’m making a similar app, but I’m glad you were first so you could answer all the questions from those who just don’t “get it”!

Keep up the good work man!
    Ken

The Get Followers project is going great, but what about NON-ENGLISH tweeters!? Seems like language would be a simple way to add some basic targeting. (And Twitter is BIG in Spain and Germany.)

How simple would be to duplicate this in Spanish or German?

  13. Gary Says:

BILLinBCN: The idea could easily be cloned and targeted specifically at another language. This isn’t a project for me however.

  14. Jag (SEO) Follow Says:

Thanks for TwitterSheep link and on anyway i tweet about SEO / IM that all my followers like :)

    Hey Gary,

I like the idea of Tweetergetter. I’ve signed up on it; However, it’s been almost a week and I still have only 30 followers. I’m not sure if I should sign up again, or what. you can email me if you’d like.

    Jordan.

    Hi Gary
“the fact that it is a viral downline builder means it will largely attract and interest a particular group of people… business minded people, internet marketers and entrepreneurs.”

    You have rightly said it.

Without TweeterGetter, I would probably not have hooked on
to using Twitter to promote my business.

After seeing what Tweeter Getter can do, I quickly re-modified
another tweeter plugin I now called Twit4dollar.

This is to target people TweeterGetter send and are interested
in making money from the proposed 19530 followers.

Twit4dollar tries to make them part with $1 and also
their email. All will not be interested but we hope to only
get 5 people out 19530 tweetergetter send. They too
will do their 5, like a viral, and we will make $19 530 at
    the completion of 5th level.

No you can do more than 5. At the moment we
have a conversion of 1 out 50 sent from TweeterGetter.
    that is a potential of 3906 opt-in leads + $$$$$ too.

We you can do more than this also. It is still early
there is no magic to making money other than patience
    and hard work.

You have solved part of my problem ……..and thank
you and others that I am using there scripts.

Anyone want to test this……it is only $1 investment,
    ideal for recession business.

  18. Technology Blog Says:

I’ve too experienced the same, my analytics data shows that visitors from twitter spend 0-10sec only on my blog.

  19. smashill Says:

I think this is like a snowball system, and I’ve never been a fan of those. And actually those people are not the ones you target, as they probably want the same as you and don’t need what you have to offer and instead want to offer themselves.

  20. pallisade Says:

I signed up, but now want out, it’s not for me. How can I stop this constant flow of irrelevant ‘followers’. Gary, please offer some solution to this.

Solutions to problems is good marketing. I feel annoyed – not good marketing. Unless annoying people is your branding intent?

  21. Michael Fidler Says:

Gary, I wish you all the success in the world! If people get value from your system, I think it’s great. I don’t understand why I’m being followed by many of your new users if I’m not one of them. I thought I have to be part of your system in order to be followed. Is this true? If I am on a suggested follower list, could you please take my name off of it. Thanks!

  22. Gary Says:

The only way to opt out is to change your twitter username.

  23. Benny Nardino Says:

Great post Gary. Thanx for the twittersheep link. very useful.

  24. ace Says:

I think it’s sad that pron [yes misspelled on purpose] spammers are trying to use it to get people to go to their sites. I had to already block 3 of them from the use of tweetergetter so far.

  25. Sue Says:

Gary, Hate to disappoint you, but I got hooked by the concept of tweetergetter in March and it did not grow my follower list hardly at all. It doesn’t speak well of your other information for which you charge money. I did notice that you have some positive testimonials, great for them, but it didn’t work for me…

  26. Wyposazenie Hoteli Says:

Well sure, there always will be some nay-sayers but I don’t think they’re right. You might get some untargetterd followers but a big chunk of them will be interested in your stuff.

  27. Paul Easton Says:

Dunno if you know but tweeter getter is on error at the moment………

    Paul

  28. MoneyMan Says:

Most of my followers are not real :(
I dont know how to get real followers

  29. MoneyMan Says:

I hope we can get real followers

  30. Mario Pesce Says:

It is interesting, but I am more interested in having a few targeted followers rather than a high number of people who are not really targeted.

    Regards

    Mario Pesce

  31. Scott Says:

I am new to Twitter Getter, how do I get started using it. I cannot find the place where I input my Twitter username and password.

  32. Gary Says:

I’ve closed it while I work on an upgrade to it…

  33. Dyski Says:

I think that every automatic device used in websites such as Tweeter would give nothing good eventually. Inviting everyone is something that makes your site less visible instead of increasing that. The limit of 2000 following is something that could stop people from following everyone but I don’t know if everyone is aware of that fact. 2000 followers is maximum and if you want to follow more you need to have at least 1800 followers (that is 10% less than you follow). And that rule is active every time you follow more people.

  34. StayBank Says:

Looks like the biggest part of the day was from 10 to 11. (I think I’m remembering that right.) Don’t those numbers close in on a 30K total?

  35. LeslieZ Says:

Great blog! I love twittersheep. It is nice to checkout my followers & make sure I’ve got the right audience. I signed up for your TweeterGetter but the email confirmation just bounced me back to your blog. I didn’t get any info on TweeterGetter.

  36. xmizanx Says:

    wow really great info
    it work for me
